Hula Beyond the Ala #10

Hula Beyond The Ala

As I reflect on my time in Seattle, I pause to give thanks to the lineage of hula I descend from. It is because of my mother, @puacase, and her Kumu, ‘A‘ala Roy, and her Kumu, ‘Iolani Luahine that I am her, an ‘ōlapa in training to one day become a Kumu Hula.

The older I get the more I understand my sacred commitment to hula. The older my mother gets, the more I understand why it is so important to offer my highest form of presence and precision to her like I offer lei to kuahu. The older our children get, the more I understand the reason why I feel so called to pass it all down.

I hear my mother in my voice when I chant. I never got to hear Kumu ‘A’ala chant in person, but because she taught my mom, I have heard her in my mothers voice for my entire life. I never got to hear Kumu ‘Iolani chant in person, but because she taught Kumu ‘A‘ala, I have heard her, too, in my mothers voice.

And in my own.
And now I hear them in the voices of the women I teach.

And it is as powerful as it is beautiful.
