MELE KIAʻI MAUNA: WHERE CREATIVITY AND COMMUNITY COMMITMENT COLLIDE

Curated by Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio. Presented by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. Co-sponsored by Empowering Pacific Islander Communities (EPIC), Nā ʻŌiwi NYC, and NYU Native Studies Forum. Out of the ongoing struggle led by Native Hawaiian people to protect Mauna a Wākea (Maunakea), a movement was born and cultivated by families and cultural practitioners who have lived in relationship to this sacred land for generations. To honor these protectors and organizers, and their expression and practice of Aloha ʻĀina (“love of the land”), we highlight some of the creativity that has been inspired by this movement, and which, in turn, has inspired the kiaʻi devoted to the ongoing protection of our ʻāina. We offer our mele and our aloha to Mauna a Wākea with the intention to continue to protect her so long as she is threatened. Featuring Pua Case, Hāwane Rios, Kapulei Flores, Kaumakaʻiwa Kanakaʻole, Punahele Kutzen, Ihilani Lasconia, Zachary Lum, Jonathan Kay Kamakawiwoʻole Osorio, and Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio.

Sacred Summits to Frontline Actions: An Evening with Pua Case and Chief Caleen Sisk

A conversation with Chief Caleen Sisk, the Spiritual Leader and Tribal Chief of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe in northern California. Her ancestral territory expands along the McCloud River watershed on Mt. Shasta. She is the fifth leader in an unbroken traditional leadership since settler contact who has dedicated her life to advocating for the restoration of salmon, water and the human right to water. She has received international honors as a tireless sacred site protector, and currently leads the tribe’s resistance against the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s proposal to raise Shasta Dam 18-feet and inundate or damage more than 40 sacred sites.

'AHA PULE 'ĀINA HOLO 2020, KOA'EKEA WAIPI'O

Due to Covid-19, we decided not to carry out our annual Makahiki 'Aha Pule 'Āina Holo ceremonies as usual. So rather then having the community gathering in mass, and relaying the prayer staff, a small crew of us dedicated 2 days to go around the whole of Hawai'i Island. We held ceremonies at each of the spots we normally run to and offer prayer.

In Solidarity with Water Protectors

In solidarity with water protectors. It was an honor to partner with @hownottotravellikeabasicbitch and @hawanemusic to bring awareness to critical water issues in Mauna Kea. Mauna Kea is a mountain in Hawai’i that holds ICE AGE WATER that flows to the streams & rivers of Hawai’i, emptying into the ocean. There is a threat of a telescope being built at the top which will contaminate the water as currently 13 telescopes sit atop this sacred mountain and leak hydraulic fluid. Water is sacred. Water is life. KU KIA’I MAUNA.

Nahko Bear on Mauna Kea and the Collective Prayer

Nahko Bear speaks about his connection to Mauna Kea.

“The prayer is that we would become closer to each other in a way of a collective consciousness, that more people begin to think in a similar way, as caretakers. And looking at how we can live together on this planet in a way that isn’t divisive or destructive, that would be the prayer.”
