educate, uplift & protect

Mauna Kea Education and Awareness (MKEA) was created in April, 2015 by concerned and committed community members in Waimea, predominantly Native Hawaiian and all women who recognized the immediate and urgent need for all communities to have a deeper knowledge of Mauna a Wākea, also known as Mauna Kea. The organization began in response to the proposed building of an eighteen story Thirty Meter Telescope on the upper slopes of a mountain the native Hawaiians view as sacred, as the water source for the island and landscape utilized by practitioners to maintain and sustain the life ways of their ancestors.

Our mission is to educate and raise the awareness of communities in Hawai’i and beyond on the spiritual, historical, cultural, environmental, and political significance of Mauna Kea and provide cultural learning opportunities to everyone from keiki to kupuna, residents, visitors, and others concerned about native and cultural rights and responsibilities in order to create a platform for the protection of sacred places and for social justice and positive change.

KŪKULU

Welina Mai! He Mai! I kū a hele mai I ka mauna, nou ka mauna.

Should you wish to come to the mountain, the mountain is here for you.

KŪKULU: The Pillars of Mauna a Wākea is a traveling art exhibit focused on recognizing the pillars who stand for Mauna Kea, bringing the mountain to the masses, and connecting communities to the culture and traditions related to Mauna Kea. From one pair of boots to 22 exhibits later, Mauna Kea remains the beacon, the unifier, and the center of every KŪKULU exhibit. At the same time, each exhibit is unique as it recognizes the people, culture, issues and victories of those hosting the displays. No matter where you find a KŪKULU exhibit, it has been made possible through the support and hard work of schools, organizations, and community members who are standing for the protection of Mauna Kea and all sacred places.

KŪKULU - A Tribute to the Pillars of Mauna a Wakea is a compilation album of prayers, chants, spoken word and songs for Mauna Kea to acknowledge, recognize and honor protectors from Hawai'i and around the world.
