Hula Beyond the Ala #14

Hula Beyond The Ala

In 1830, upon the arrival and influence of foreign missionaries, hula was banned and could not be done in public places.

In 1874, King Kalākaua declared that hula could be practiced and performed in public again.

In 2019, ceremony of prayer, chant, and hula were carried out as sacred ritual three times a day every day for 9 months on the Protect Mauna Kea Movement frontlines.

This marks one of the longest ceremonies done since the 1800s.

We are a living people with a living and evolving culture.
Our story as a people continues to unfold because we are still here.

And we are still dancing hula and still protecting our homelands because our ancestors never stopped dancing, chanting, and loving Hawai’i.
