NOHO MAUNA

“Noho Mauna is an artistic collaboration between Kuulei Music, Shawn Pimental, and the Mauna Kea Education and Awareness Hui. The song acknowledges the “wahine noho mauna” - the mountain-dwelling women. It honors the natural phenomena and elements like the life-giving mist, snow, and waters that sustain us as kanaka. The song compares the strength of the mountain to the resilience of the people that love her, and acknowledges the diverse roles of different kinds of women: the wahine noho mauna - the women who stand in physical affection for sacred place, the makuahine hale ola - the ones who bring and keep life in the home, the luahine kuanoʻo - the kūpuna-like women of thought who deepen into their studies, and the akua wahine themselves who dwell in the wao akua (summit region) of  Mauna a Wakea.”
